With AMP Stories, Google is backing experiments with a format similar to Instagram Stories. The experiments involve a group of publishers that include The Washington Post and CNN among others, as can be read on NiemanLab.
Snapchat and Instagram Stories have “visual components and engaging aspects” that could be interesting for journalists. However, as of yet there is still a lot of experimentation to be done. This group of publishers is looking at the form and figuring out how they can use it to their advantage. These stories would appear in a separate section on publishers’ websites.
The format wouldn’t be for every news item. “We see it as a new tool in our toolbox for when there are stories with highly visual elements that we can tell in this manner,” said Dave Merrell, lead product manager at The Washington Post.
