This columnist defined his own offline

Farhad Manjoo, a New York Times tech columnist, asserted in a column that he went offline for two months and that he “unplugged from Twitter and other social networks.” His Twitter feed proved that that was untrue, as Columbia Journalism Review’s Dan Mitchell says.

Manjoo claimed he went offline for all of January and February, resorting to print newspapers and weekly magazine The Economist, making an exception for “podcasts, email newsletters, and books and magazines”.

The columnist defended himself by saying “I think it’s clear that I meant I ‘unplugged’ from Twitter as a source of news, not that I didn’t tweet at all.” However, Mr. Manjoo retweeted and even commented on tweets from news sources during the period mentioned. “It could be that Manjoo’s column really does serve as a warning about the pernicious effects of social media. Just not in the way he meant it,” writes Dan Mitchell.
