Your trusty local news stations set examples

According to NiemanLab, thirty newsrooms are currently looking into trust-building strategies as part of ‘Trusting News.’ A survey carried out by the project has revealed that, though still low, local stations have higher trust rates than national news services.

In light of their participation in the ‘Trusting News’ initiative, WCPO (a Cincinnati local news station) is making an effort to be transparent in why and how they investigated a story about disciplinary cases involving Cincinnati police departments.

“Our motives are simple: We want to make sure the people who protect us and enforce our laws are worthy of the high level of trust the public gives them,” wrote Mike Canan, then WCPO.com’s editor.

Part of the newsrooms’ experimentation involved a use of social media comments in order to build engagement with their audience. The newsrooms involved are using these comments to improve, and so far it’s reaping benefits.
